The Friday Five - 05/17/19

Welcome to the Marriage and Martinis’ Friday Five!

5) Get ready for some Polyamory!

We’re so excited to share this upcoming Monday’s episode with sociologist and Polyamory expert, Dr. Elisabeth Sheff. After reading her book, The Polyamorists Next Door, I became so interested in learning about this lifestyle (estimated to be practiced by between 4-5% of the population) that I had to ask Dr. Eli to come on the podcast. She is in her fourth round of research, and she taught us so much about what is entailed in a choice that involves having relationships with multiple people at once, or being married to someone who does so (called ethical monogamy). A few terms you will want to know before listening:

- Polyamory (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH POLYGAMY): the practice of engaging in multiple sexual relationships with the consent of all the people involved.

- Monogamish: couple sees each other as their main romantic and sexual partner but allow for outside sexual experiences every once in a while.

- Triad: relationship between three people. Usually, this refers to a relationship where all three people are actively involved with each other (A is dating B, B is dating C, and A is dating C), also known as a "delta" or "triangle" triad or the more recent "throuple."

- Unicorn Hunting: a heterosexual couple seek a bisexual woman to join their relationship. "Unicorn hunting" is where a male/female couple look to find one person who they can permanently invite into their relationship. They form a "triad" with the couple.

4) What I’m Binging:

Dead To Me” on Netflix. If you haven’t yet watched Dead To Me on Netflix, then you’re, well, Dead To Me. Christina Applegate’s performance alone is pretty much brilliant, and her character’s ridiculously trashy mouth couldn’t help but warm my heart and make me feel a little less worried about my inability to “tone it down.” Linda Cardellini’s performance is also amazing. I saw this show hailed as the “younger version of Grace and Frankie.” Whether or not that’s really accurate, I love how these women over 40 (and over 80!!!!) are currently killing it in television.

3) We’re Digger Deeper Into The Mental Load:

Our Mental Load episode has quickly become one of our top three most downloaded episodes. Moms are saying it’s been “life-changing,” and that getting their spouse to listen has helped to open up a dialogue that desperately needed to happen. We’re not the only ones exploring this crucial topic, and we’ll sit down with an author in a few weeks who wants to shed light on the fact that there is nothing really “equal” about the parenting roles. If you would like to read her book before she comes on, it’s called All The Rage. Feel free to send us questions to ask her about this topic whether you’ve read the book or not. Let’s start making the invisible visible and feeling like we’re getting the recognition and help we need and deserve from our partners. Know a mom who’s completely stressed out? Send her the mental load episode.

2) They Don’t Sponsor Us, But Adam Loves It

If you're looking for that special Father's Day gift for a whiskey drinker, look no further than Angel's Envy! Their Angel's Envy Rye is hard to find and pricey, but so worth it! Otherwise, check out their Angel's Envy Bourbon. It's highly rated, available in most liquor stores, and 1/2 the price of the rye. And don't forget your large ice cubes!

1) Date Night Questions - From The Communication Episode Part 1

  1. In what ways do you think you communicate well?

  2. In what ways do you think I communicate well?

  3. In what ways do you think we could communicate more effectively as a couple?

  4. Do you think you’ve ever been in a situation in life that’s taught you to communicate more effectively? What was it?

  5. What do you need more of from me in the future so we can improve our communication in our relationship? (and vice versa)

When you support our sponsors, you support us!

(And you get some really cool sh*t).
